Sigur Ros - Takk... (Album Review)

Updated: Feb 8, 2018

Takk... was my first introduction to Sigur Ros, and as with pretty much anything I've heard, I can remember where I was when I first heard it whenever I hear it again.

Now, before I talk ab

out this album, I feel I should provide a comparison as to what I consider the album to be like.

What is that comparison? Well, like a soundtrack to an adventure.

Takk... is the opening track going by the same name of the album, and it gently baits your curious spirit with a calm allur

e which oozes optimism and happiness. Instantly you feel like a child again, oh to be young again...right?!

If we're talking adventure, think of this piece as the opening of the door into an unexplored land, and...off you go. Glosoli comes into the fray with a gentle heartbeat of a bass line accompanied with what I think is actual footsteps, a fitting sound for the adventure. You want to go on, see what more there is to discover. You're off down the road, now the adventure begins...

Hoppipolla, wow. Just imagine that Piano being the soundtrack as you stumble across something new and wonderful on the adventure. You'll think you know the tune, even if you have never heard it, it's warm, it's welcoming and familiar. You'll be wanting to stay here a while, and that's ok.

Sadly though, all adventures do come to an end, and Gong is the piece that begins your journey home, the long bittersweet goodbye to the discovery you'll be sure to visit again. From here onwards the album starts to wind you down gently and Andvari is the company for the post adventure blues where you ponder anything and everything on your way back home. So here you are, home again and now enter Svo Hljott, the slightly distant and melancholy piano granting you more pause for thought as you tell your friends of what you've found and what you want to share with them. As night closes in, the true end of the adventure comes with Heysatan, heavier and heavier your eyes become, but your ears cherish every last sound.

Goodnight...
