Ignoring the Fanbase

It was back when I was in university (2011 I think?) Anyhow, a band I'd recently stumbled across on YouTube and I was really really digging. Fast forward a couple of weeks, and past me having bought all their releases up to that point and I find out they're booked to play my student union. You know how it is, new favourite band, then playing real close to you, you're gonna go right? So there I am on the door, get inside and head to the merch stand before the gig starts, grabbed my wristband and T-shirt in support of them. The gig? Absolutely solid! Couldn't fault them live. However all this is build up to something else, setting the scene if you will. Fast forward again to 2015 when I started The Underground Billboard. Now, you'll notice I haven't name dropped, reason being this isn't a name and shame article. So yeah, the blog is starting off, and by this point maybe 10 or so videos done so far, 3 bands per video, I'm putting together a Heavy Metal episode, and I really want to promote that band I saw, so I reach out via my official blog page simply asking for nothing more than permission to use a piece of their work in one of my videos and give them some free press, it's worth adding I didn't have ads on my videos so I wasn't making money off the bands, I just did it cause I. wanted to help them out a bit, or try to. So anyway, with the extra context given to you there, I managed to track down the guitarist of the band on Facebook, and sent him my proposal, by this time Facebook had added the whole 'seen' thing to messages. So he'd received the message and read it too, and I'm feeling pretty good about that and hoping he responds with a yes. To my surprise, I get ignored and instead slated in a status by him, amongst a sprawl of pictures of his cat. My opinion? Not cool, at all. So I dropped any support I had for the band, sold my shirt and wristband and deleted their music. Now, I can tell you're probably thinking 'oh boo hoo, fan didn't get to talk to a band' yadda yadda yadda. Yes, I was pissed that I got ignored after having my message read, and I didn't see reason to support some one who ignores a fan. However, my issue with this grew to a different scope. It made me think, should you support a band that ignores its fans? And should a band ignore them in the first place if their contact was acknowledged? After all, we the fans are what pay the bills, yeah you have labels supporting them financially to a degree, but those records only sell cause we buy them, the tickets only sell cause we buy them, and the merch only sells cause we buy it. So in short, if you're reading this and you're in a band, if some one takes the time to reach out to you and you do see it, just at least reply. In my case a simple 'No thanks but thanks for the offer' would've been fine. Anyway, any thoughts on this?
