Censorship in music is something I became pretty into back in an old job I used to have, there would either be the local radio on (which still sends chills down me) or one of the big national stations on, however...both played fairly similar music and repeated the same music too. So after hearing the same thing over and over, I took my mind back to when rock and metal had a good foothold on the airwaves and I asked myself why it's no longer so. At first I landed on the cliche of 'it's not mainstream, that's why', but then I started to think about what about those genres may have impacted this, to which I then landed on the thought of how ridiculous censorship on the radio is. Yes Metal and rock do tend to use profanity more then some, but hey, I'm not judging. Anyway...pop music and 'radio friendly' music uses profanity too, and it got me thinking. What's the point in censoring a word when we hear the start of it anyway and almost always know what it is, so why waste the time censoring it in the first place? Following on from that point, there's even pop songs riddled with innuendo such as the song Blow my Whistle by the rapper Flor Rida, yet these are free from the censorship airbrush, why? If a song gets got for saying 'bitch' or shit', then why not a song about oral sex? Especially on a platform where you can't control who listens? Now, before I go on, let me just state, I'm not bashing any genres here, just picking examples to try and illustrate my point. Ok, now that's said, feel free to read on. One point at which music censorship really irritated me, or lack of in this case was back when I was in college. My tutor took me and my classmates into the recording studio at college and as he would sometimes, showed us a piece of music and/or video which had been in his head and we'd then discuss off the back of it. The song and video of choice was Window Licker by the artist Aphex Twin, a song I do enjoy if we're being honest. Anyway, my issue was not with the song, but with the video, the long version of the video. I can't remember entirely what happens in the opening, but what I do remember is two black men riding around together and it seemed like every other word was the 'N' word, being thrown around like there was a fire sale on it. Why am I picking out that word in particular? Well, because the word has obviously got a past to it, and it also being a derogatory term too, and it's also no stranger the airwaves. yes it does get 'censored' but we all know when we hear it on the radio. So I guess in short my argument is, why is it totally cool to use these words in music if all that needs to be done to make it 'radio friendly' is to cut part of the word off? which apparently disguises the word. It doesn't make sense to me. Either don't try to hide it, or don't allow it to start with. I'm not saying I'm right by any means, so feel free to weigh in via the comments. Let's discuss :)
